چکیده

5 Preface The Center for Scientific Computing (CSC) exists to help Finnish scientists and engineers in their research. We provide cross-disciplinary expertise, computational resources and fast network connections. We also organize courses and publish textbooks on scientific computing. The organization known today as CSC has existed for more than 25 years. Currently over 70 experts on science, engineering and information technology work at CSC. This report focuses on the achievements of our customers. We have selected illustrative examples from, e.g., physics, chemistry, biosciences, economics and astronomy. This report can only show a small sample of the results produced by our customers: CSC has over 1500 users, who are involved in over 700 active projects. We hope this report encourages our customers to " think big ". We are currently compiling a report on the Finnish grand challenges in scientific computing. We hope that the next supercomputer system — to be installed in 2000 or 2001 — will make it possible to meet at least some of these challenges. Please contact CSC is you have research projects that are not possible to solve using current computers and computational methods. In addition to this report, CSC publishes annual reports and newsletters describing the activities of our customers and personnel. You can also have a look at our services on the World Wide Web (http://www.csc.fi). We thank all the writers for their interesting and readable contributions. The editing board also planned the content and style of the report and contacted the writers. In addition, many colleagues suggested improvements to the report. We appreciate all the help we received. We hope that you enjoy this interdisciplinary review of scientific computing. Please send your comments about this report to the e-mail address

Assefaw Hadish Gebremedhin Research Statement I. Research Areas

I am interested in algorithmics, parallel computing, and combinatorial scientific computing (CSC). Since the third in this list is unlikely to be known as widely as the first two, I offer a brief description. CSC is an interdisciplinary area where one applies discrete mathematics and algorithmics to identify and solve critical combinatorial problems in a variety of computational contexts in sci...

On the CSC Property of Signal Transition Graph Specifications for Asynchronous Circuit Design

This paper proposes a new approach for asynchronous logic synthesis from Signal Transition Graph (STG) speci cations. The Complete State Coding (CSC) property of STGs is a necessary condition to get a circuit implementation from an STG. We present a novel method to check the CSC property of STGs. We also discuss some heuristics which automatically modify the STG so that the CSC property is sati...

Designing and Prototyping Interactive Fluid Dynamics Exhibits for the Carnegie Science Center: An Undergraduate Team Project Experience

This paper describes a team project experience at Carnegie Mellon University in which undergraduate students designed and prototyped interactive exhibits to teach principles of fluid dynamics. The client for the exhibits was the Carnegie Science Center (CSC) in Pittsburgh. The CSC promotes science awareness, focusing primarily on stimulating science appreciation in preteenagers through interact...

The L-CSC cluster: greenest supercomputer in the world in Green500 list of November 2014

The L-CSC (Lattice Computer for Scientific Computing) is a general purpose compute cluster built of commodity hardware installed at GSI. Its main operational purpose is Lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations for physics simulations. Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) is the physical theory describing the strong force, one of the four known fundamental interactions in the universe. L-CSC leverages a multi-G...

Exact Linearisation Is a Special Case of Non-linear Gpc Report Csc-98005

The continuous-time generalised predictive controller is shown to include the exact-linearisation controller as a special case. An alternative (prediction-free) version of GPC is shown to provide one possible extension of exact linearisation to cope with nonlinear systems with unstable dynamics.
